Brad Childress won’t call the plays in Cleveland

We don’t know who will take snaps at quarterback for the Browns next year. We do know who will call the plays: The same guy that called them last year. Pat Shurmur said Wednesday that he will remain the team’s playcaller, while new offensive coordinator Brad Childress will assist Shurmur on gamedays in the booth.

Playcalling ability is probably an overrated skill in the NFL and Shurmur understandably doesn’t want to give up one of the most fun parts of the job. That’s only a problem if a head coach that also calls plays struggles in game management on Sundays.

A judge sentenced the parents of an 8-year-old Cleveland boy who died from Hodgkin lymphoma to a maximum term of eight years in prison. Willie Robinson died in March, 2008, after suffering for months from undiagnosed swollen glands. Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Michael Astrab handed down the sentences Thursday for Monica Hussing, 37, and William Robinson Sr., 40, of Cleveland.

“If anybody, anybody didn’t know this kid was sick,” Astab thundered from the bench, “they are seriously, seriously disturbed.”

Cleveland’s casino will be first to open in Ohio

Cleveland’s casino will open on May 14, the first full-service gambling facility in Ohio. “I’m not going to downplay it, this is historic. This will be the first casino in the state of Ohio,” a reserved but happy Marcus Glover, general manager of Cleveland’s Horseshoe Casino, said after the Casino Control Commission chose his site over a rival Toledo casino.

“The historic nature is significant, but we want to make sure that not only are we the first but we’re the best and we do it in the right way,” he said.

New trial ordered in Cleveland fire that killed 9

Prosecutors said Thursday they plan to appeal a judge’s order granting a new trial for a Cleveland man convicted of setting a fire that killed eight children and a woman in the deadliest house blaze in the city’s history.

A federal jury convicted Antun Lewis, 28, last year of using gasoline to set the 2005 fire that killed Medeia Carter and the eight children, aged 7 to 14, who were attending a birthday sleepover at her house. He faced a possible life sentence.

Republican Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich stopped in Cleveland Wednesday during a tour of the Buckeye State. He came to Jergens Manufacturing to highlight how American manufacturing can be successful and bring more jobs to the area. Speaking to workers inside the facility, he told them how his plan for allowing companies to write off their new equipment expenses could allow companies to modernize and reinvest.

“They would be able to modernize so rapidly that no one could catch up with them and so we want to have a tax code that really favors manufacturing jobs,” said the former House Speaker.

Cleveland area leads nation in percentage drop in jobs

Greater Cleveland led the nation in percentage of lost jobs in the past year, the U.S. Labor Department said Wednesday.

The Cleveland-Elyria-Mentor metro area saw a 0.2 percent decrease in non farm payroll employment between December 2010 and December 2011. The Philadelphia and Indianapolis areas metro areas posted the same percentage decrease.

Although manufacturing grew last year, the increase could not offset job losses in finance and insurance, said George Zeller, an economic research analyst in Cleveland.

The Lima and Youngstown areas showed greater growth in manufacturing, especially in the auto industry.

The economy in greater Steubenville also grew, but that was because of a booming shale gas and oil sector.

The Cleveland area lost about 2,400 jobs over the year, including 1,281 in the finance and insurance sector in Cuyahoga County alone, Zeller said.

Alaska’s Cleveland Volcano raises alarms

Authorities have raised the alert level for Cleveland Volcano in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, suggesting it may be on the verge of erupting ash and disrupting air travel. Also known as Mount Cleveland, the 5,676-foot volcano has recently developed a new lava dome, just a few weeks after its previous dome exploded in December.

Cleveland’s alert level is now orange, which indicates a “watch” rather than a yellow “advisory.” It’s one of the most active volcanoes in the Aleutians, and it has been especially mercurial in recent months, frequently prompting scientists to switch its alert status.

“Renewed eruptive activity of Cleveland Volcano has been observed in satellite data,” the U.S. Geological Survey warns, citing the growth of a lava dome that has now reached 130 feet (40 meters) in diameter. “It remains possible for intermittent, sudden explosions of blocks and ash to occur at any time, and ash clouds exceeding 20,000 feet above sea level may develop.”

While its remote location means it poses little direct danger to people, a large ash cloud could spell trouble for intercontinental flights through Alaska. As CNN reports, about 90 percent of air freight from Asia to North America and Europe passes through Alaska airspace, while hundreds of flights carry more than 20,000 passengers through Anchorage daily. “If there is an explosion and [ash] reaches high altitudes, it will causes flights to be rerouted and ultimately canceled,” Steve McNutt of the University of Alaska-Fairbanks tells CNN.

Fausto Carmona put on restricted list

The Indians made a move with the pitcher they’ve only known for the last 11-plus years as Fausto Carmona. Carmona, who was arrested last week in the Dominican Republic on false identity charges, was placed on baseball’s restricted list Thursday by the club.

The Indians had to apply to the commissioner’s office in order to have Carmona placed on the list because of his unusual legal entanglement. Players on the restricted list do not count against a team’s 25- or 40-man roster and will not be paid until they report.

LeBron James Mentoring Cleveland Cavaliers Rookies

Most Cleveland sports fans, we can safely assume, hate LeBron James. But that doesn’t apply to the city’s sports stars, some of whom continue to look to James for professional advice and guidance. Per the Sun-Sentinel and ESPN: “As high school stars, Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson met James at his invitation-only camp. Ever since then, the two Cleveland Cavaliers rookies have kept in contact with James, looking at him as a source of advice. It doesn’t matter that James broke Cleveland’s heart, leaving the Cavaliers to play for the Miami Heat. James’ relationship with Irving and Thompson remains the same. ‘I think besides what I do individually, I think that’s just what I was born to do, and that’s just try to give back,’ James said.
